How to Replace DI Resin in Your RODI System

How to Replace DI Resin in Your RODI System

Steps to Changing Your DI Resin

Replacing the DI resin in your RODI (Reverse Osmosis Deionization) system is essential for maintaining high water quality. The process for installing and removing the DI resin canister is straightforward, but changing the DI media itself varies depending on whether you have a refillable DI resin cartridge or a pre-packed filled DI cartridge.

Here’s a detailed guide to help you through the process of changing out your DI resin cartridges:

Pre-Packed Filled DI Resin Cartridge

  1. Remove the Old Cartridge: Begin by removing the old DI cartridge from the canister. This is the same process as described in your system’s manual for removing any filter.
  2. Replace the New Cartridge: Insert the new cartridge into the correct position within the canister.
  3. Check the Arrow: Ensure the arrow on the side of the new DI filter cartridge is pointing up. The correct positioning of your DI cartridge is crucial for its proper function.
  4. Screw the Canister Back On: Once the new cartridge is in place, screw the canister back onto the RODI system. Your system is now ready to use with the new DI cartridge.

Refillable DI Resin Cartridge

If you're using a refillable DI cartridge, the DI resin will be in loose media form. Here’s how to replace a refillable DI resin cartridge:

1. Remove the Canister and Cartridge

First, remove the canister and the old DI cartridge as described in your system’s manual.

2. Open the Cartridge

Take the old DI cartridge and unscrew the cap. Set the cap and the sponge inside aside carefully, ensuring not to lose them.

3. Dispose of Old Resin

Dump the old DI resin media into the trash.

4. Refill with New Resin

  • Fill the cartridge with new DI resin media to about 25% full.
  • Tap the cartridge on your work surface 15-20 times to settle the resin as much as possible.
  • Fill the cartridge to about 50% full and tap again 15-20 times to settle the resin.
  • Continue this process until the cartridge is completely full or slightly overflowing with resin. It’s essential that the DI resin is packed tightly; otherwise, it will not function correctly.

5. Prepare the Cartridge for Use:

  • Use your fingertip to draw a circle around the top edge of the resin to remove any beads from the threads.
  • Wipe the threads clean of any remaining resin beads.
  • Place the foam ring on top of the resin, then push down on the sponge and screw on the cap securely.

6. Reinsert the Cartridge:

Insert the newly filled cartridge into the canister and screw it back onto your RODI system.

Final Steps to DI Resin Replacement

Once you have installed the new DI resin cartridge, it’s essential to flush your system to ensure optimal performance:

  1. Rinse the New Filters: Turn on your source water and open the flush valve for 60 seconds. This will flush out any sediment and carbon filters.
  2. Produce Initial Water: Close the flush valve and allow the system to produce a gallon or two of water before collecting any RODI water for use in your aquarium.

Maintenance Tips

  • Frequency: Typically, you will need to perform this process at least once a year. However, if you have particularly dirty water or use a significant amount of RODI water, you may need to replace the resin more frequently.
  • Monitor Performance: Regularly check your filter cartridges’ performance to ensure they are effectively removing contaminants and maintaining water quality.
  • RO Membrane Replacement: Changing your RO membrane is a different process and generally needs to be done every 2-3 years under normal use.

By following these steps, you can ensure your RODI system continues to provide high-quality water for your aquarium, maintaining a healthy environment for your aquatic life.

Proper maintenance can help to reduce the number of times you need to replace a DI resin cartridge.
